Last night, a couple of my friends asked me if I wanted to play Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer. I cut my teeth on shooters growing up, flitting between Infection lobbies in Halo 3 and high-octane bouts of Call of Duty’s Demolition, so an invitation to return to that world of voguish quickscopes and rogue rocket-propelled grenades was enticing, to say the very least.

- PC is the second most active, and mostly because of iw4x. IW4x is an open source project that allows you to set up your own dedicated servers with modifications for Modern Warfare 2 on top of a decentralized network. Main issue is the lack of vanilla lobbies and possible ping (it's region based).

MW2 is perfectly safe on Steam. I've played for over a year and never found anybody doing weird stuff to my computer, other than unlocking everything and changing my class names. Another step to take is to head back into Steam, go to the “Games” tab, and then right-click on the Modern Warfare 2 line. Click “Properties” and then “Local Files.”. In that box, there’s an option to Verify the Integrity of the game files. Hit that, wait for the process to complete, and then try to get back into MW2.
